| Non-toxic Art Materials for PolyShrink This page is proportioned for trouble free printing at full page width. Remember that you can adjust type size in your browser! |
Most art supplies are labeled with the voluntary hazard rating, (Conforms to ASTM D-4236), which requires a warning on art materials that pose a chronic hazard. Conforming to this standard means that the product has been tested and that the labeling will say whether or not the product contains toxic substances. If the labeling says "rated non-toxic" or lacks any warnings, it is suitable for use by children. If the labeling contains the words "warning" or "caution", it is not suitable. When a company hasn't opted to use the rating system, it's safest to consider the material toxic, or contact the company for more information. The products below bear the ASTM-D non-toxic
rating. Since there are thousands of art supplies on the market, this
is in no way a complete list. It is intended to serve as a guide. |
| Art Supply | Brand Name | Manufacturer/ Web address |
| Colored Pencils | Rose Art, Prang, Crayola (pencils, not crayons), Prismacolor | Rose Art • Prang (Dixon Ticonderoga) • Crayola (Binney & Smith) • Prismacolor (Sanford) |
| Probably the most popular children's art material
for PolyShrink. Less expensive colored pencils often have harder leads than "artists" pencils such as Prismacolor. Application of harder pencils can be improved by sanding PolyShrink using a coarser grit of sandpaper. |

| Chalk pastels | Various | |
Art Supply and Rubber Stamp stores are usually the best place to find chalk type (non-oil) pastels. Many stores have an inexpensive set of 48 full sized sticks for around $15- $20. Pastels are quite permanent when rubbed into sanded PolyShrink before baking. Check individual brands for toxicity rating. |

| Markers | ||
| Non-Toxic Metallic & Paint | Galaxy Markers, Dri Mark Metallics, RoseArt Metallic Brights, Crayola Metallic Markers, Colorific Gel Markers | Galaxy Markers (American Crafts) • Dri Mark Metallic Markers • Rose Art • Crayola (Binney & Smith) |
| Though not as opaque and glitzy as xylene
based markers, these kid safe markers will be a favorite. Galaxy markers
come in solid colors as well as metallic. Sanford's Colorific Gel Markers have felt tips unlike most gel markers, which are usually ball points. They give bright, saturated color that flows smoothly onto PolyShrink. Many of these pens are sold in sets and are very reasonably priced. |
||
| Permanent | Permapaque, Sharpie, Vitrea 160 & Porcelaine 150 | Permapaque (Sakura) • Sharpie (Sanford) • Vitrea & Porcelaine (Pebeo) • |
| These pens are especially good for making
drawing that will be colored in. Plan to color drawings with colored pencils,
chalks, or the pigment pens listed below. (Coloring with the same type
of pen used for the drawing will cause the drawing to smear.) |
||
| Pigment | Fabrico markers, Marvy Memories Series | Fabrico markers (Tsukineko) • Memories Series (Marvy) |
| Good for general coloring. Since they are not very fast drying, they are often better for coloring in a design than for drawing. If done quickly, Fabrico markers can be used for coloring directly on a rubber stamp, then stamping onto sanded PolyShrink. | ||
| Stamping Inks | ||
| Heat Setting - opaque pigment | Crafter's, Fabrico, Inkredible | Crafter's (Clearsnap) • Fabrico (Tsukineko) • Inkredible (Stewart Superior) |
| These inks are great for kids to make random stampings of a precut shape. See the Kid's Hand Project for details. Very good for many other PolyShrink projects as well as for stamping on wood, fabric, and other craft surfaces. | ||
| Brilliance | Brilliance (Tsukineko) | |
| These inks are faster drying than the pigment heat set inks above. Drying times vary depending on heaviness of application, so you may wish to use them as you would the inks listed above, or prestamp images several days in advance for kids to color in. Test for compatibility with the art supply you want to use, especially if planning to use a "wet" coloring media. | ||
| Heat Setting - transparent dye | Ranger Heat Set Ink | Heat Set Ink (Ranger) |
| The transparency of these inks make it a good choice for making sun catchers on Clear PolyShrink, as well as other projects. | ||
